Terms of Service
Last updated: October 13, 2026. These terms cover the Kyou Kanji Android app, the Kyou Kanji web app and this website (together, "Kyou Kanji").
The short version
Kyou Kanji is a study tool, free during early access. Use it to learn kanji, keep your account secure, and don't misuse the service. Your progress is yours. Kyou Kanji is provided as it is, without guarantees, and paid plans aren't available yet.
Using Kyou Kanji
By using Kyou Kanji, you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. You can use Kyou Kanji for your own personal study. You don't need an account: without one, your progress is saved only on your device.
Your account
- Accounts are optional and free. You need to be at least 13 years old to create one.
- Use an email address you can receive mail at, so you can reset your password if you forget it.
- Keep your password to yourself. You're responsible for what happens in your account, so tell us if you think someone else has used it.
- You can delete your account at any time in Settings, in either app. This deletes the progress saved to it.
Acceptable use
Please don't:
- try to get into anyone else's account, or into parts of Kyou Kanji you aren't meant to reach;
- disrupt or overload Kyou Kanji, for example by creating accounts or sending requests automatically in bulk;
- copy, resell or redistribute the app itself, or present it as your own;
- use Kyou Kanji for anything illegal.
We may suspend or delete accounts that break these rules.
Your progress
Your study progress belongs to you. If you sign in, we store a copy so it can sync between your devices, as described in the privacy policy. You can export a backup of your progress at any time from Settings.
Our content, and the data we use
The Kyou Kanji apps, website, design and Kyou the fox belong to us. The kanji, word and stroke order data come from other projects and stay under their own licenses, which you're free to use them under:
- Kanji meanings and readings: KANJIDIC, © Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group (EDRDG), CC BY-SA 4.0.
- Words: JLPT vocabulary lists by Jonathan Waller (tanos.co.uk), CC BY, via open-anki-jlpt-decks (MIT); some words from JMdict, © EDRDG, CC BY-SA 4.0.
- Stroke order: KanjiVG, © Ulrich Apel, CC BY-SA 3.0.
Kyou Kanji isn't affiliated with the Japan Foundation or JEES, which run the JLPT. The JLPT doesn't publish official kanji lists, so our levels follow commonly used community lists.
Premium and payments
Premium isn't available yet, and every feature is free during early access. We don't take any payments. Before paid plans launch, we'll update these terms with how payment, renewal, cancellation and refunds work. You'll only ever be charged for something you choose to buy.
Changes to Kyou Kanji
Kyou Kanji is in early access, so features will change. We may add, change or remove features, or pause or end the service. If we ever decide to shut Kyou Kanji down, we'll give notice in the app and on this website first, so you have time to export your progress.
No guarantees
We work hard to keep Kyou Kanji accurate and available, but it's provided "as is" and "as available". We don't promise it will always work, be free of mistakes, or help you pass the JLPT or any other exam.
Limits on our liability
As far as the law allows, we aren't responsible for indirect or unexpected losses from using Kyou Kanji, such as lost study time or lost data, and our total responsibility to you is limited to what you've paid us in the 12 months before the problem (nothing, during early access). Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you. Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have by law as a consumer.
Changes to these terms
If we change these terms, we'll update the date at the top. For important changes, we'll also show a notice in the app or on this website before they take effect. If you keep using Kyou Kanji after that, the new terms apply.
